First Edition of the Italian Cuisine in the World Week

Montreal - The first edition of the Italian Cuisine in the World Week opened yesterday with a press conference at Casa d’Italia, organized by the General Consulate of Italy, in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture (IIC), the Institute for Foreign Trade and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada. The event was attended by over forty food influencers - including journalists, food bloggers, cooking schools, food importers and associations of restaurateurs.
The press conference was opened by the Consul General Marco Riccardo Rusconi, who emphasized that the link between food, culture and territory are the main traits of all Italians, both at home and abroad - and hence the 250,000 Italians and Italo-Canadian residents in Quebec. This deep relationship between food and culture, culture and which is also reflected in the very large number of Italian exports of certified quality products. Reiterating the central role of food in the contemporary world, he emphasized the affinities of the Italian Cuisine in the World Week as an extension of the main themes of of Expo 2015: nutrition and health, welfare, social solidarity and the fight against food waste.
Liza Frulla, Director of the prestigious Institut du Tourisme et Hotellerie du Quebec and former Federal Minister, pointed out that even in Quebec, as elsewhere in the world, Italian food is the most appreciated. Consequently, the Institute took these trends into account, by training their young chefs and sommelier even with internships in Italy.
The press conference ended with the speech of Francesco Miele, leader of the majority in the City Council of Montreal. Paying tribute to the Italian cuisine, he recalled that in a city like Montreal - recently elected by the press as the first qualified culinary destination in North America - the food is a peculiar expression of the different ethnic communities living in the city, and at the same time, a powerful mean to create a link among those communities.
A few words have been said to explain the main events of the Italian Cuisine in the World Week: the IIC organised the presentation of the book "Avec amour, Nonna", a recipe book which pays tribute to the culinary traditions pass down from grandmothers (21/11); a conference at the University of Laval "Banquet et Symposium - le dialogue nourriture comme au sein de la culture italienne", the social meaning of the meal, and the seasonal nature of the relationship between man and food in the Italian culture (22/11); the lecture " Les origines de régimes méditerranéenne: céréales, oliviers et vineyards", at the IIC (23/11); at the Phi Center of Montreal, the screening of the documentary "Theater of Life," inspired by the initiative of the Ambrosian Refectory that focuses on transforming food waste into meals for the needy ; at the end of the official program, tastings of Italian products are organised at the Casino of Gatineau (25/11), in collaboration with the Embassy in Ottawa, and in some supermarkets in Magog (26/11). The promotional activities will continue for a few days with some events organised by the Chamber of Commerce, at the Centre Mont-Royal: workshops and product tastings, held by Italian chefs, the presentation of DOP and IGP wines, with a focus on the Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and Lazio regions(28-29 / 11).
Press conference ended with a tasting of 100% Made in Italy products such as pasta, cold cuts, cheeses, wines and prosecco, in collaboration with two major sponsors of the food industry.
