Any person born to an Italian citizen, father or mother, is an Italian citizen regardless of place of birth (ius sanguinis). A mother transmits citizenship starting from January 1st, 1948. Before this date, only those born to an Italian father received citizenship.
The minor child of an Italian citizen is automatically an Italian citizen. The registration of the relative birth certificate is a service of the Civil Status office.
Only those who are legally and permanently resident in the consular district can apply for recognition of citizenship ius sanguinis at this Consulate General.
The applicant must demonstrate that he / she descends from an Italian ancestor without interrupting the transmission of citizenship from one generation to the next.
