C.I.E. (Electronic Identity Card)

The Consulate is now issuing the C.I.E. (Electronic Identity Card) to Italian citizens residing within its jurisdiction.

The new C.I.E. is a useful document: it identifies the citizen, it is a valid travel document within the EU, it states the Fiscal Code and can be used on the SPID system (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale), which allows the user to access several services provided by the Italian Public Administration.

 

CONDITIONS TO APPLY FOR THE C.I.E.

In order to request the C.I.E., the applicant must:

  • Be registered with the AIRE and reside within the jurisdiction of this Consulate
  • Have his/her birth certificate registered in Italy
  • Have a Fiscal Code. Citizens who currently do not have an assigned CF, should follow the instruction provided at the following link.
  • Have updated his/her information in the Consulate General Registry, if there have been changes concerning the residence address, civil status, birth of children… In the event of such changes, the applicant must request the appropriate service (AIRE and/or Civil Status: aire@esteri.it) before booking an appointment for the C.I.E.

 

FORMALITIES FOR THE ISSUANCE OF THE C.I.E.

In order to apply for a C.I.E., an appointment must be booked through the online portal Prenot@mi.

PLEASE NOTE that the personal details used for the appointment must be the ones of the citizen requesting the C.I.E.

 

DOCUMENT TO PRESENT FOR THE ISSUANCE OF THE C.I.E.

  • A photograph (Canadian passport size)
  • The form, duly filled and signed. For minors, the form must be signed by both parents;
  • An Italian ID (regardless of its expiry date)
  • The former ID card (if one was already issued)
  • The written consent of both parents in the event the applicant is an individual under the age of 18; if the parents are Italian citizens or citizens of a country of the European Union (EU), they can sign the consent on the form. If one of the parents is a citizen of a Third Country (non-EU), the document must be signed in person at: the Consulate Generale of Montreal, if he/she resides within its jurisdiction (an appointment must be booked via the Prenot@mi portal); the responsible Questura or Commissariato, if he/she resides in Italy; at the Consular Office having jurisdiction over the place where he/she lives
  • The consular fees, which can be paid either in cash or with a money order made out to the Consulate General of Montreal. To assess the due amount, please visit the Consulate Table at the following link, updated every three months.

 

The application form for the C.I.E. must be sent via email to the address montreal.cie@esteri.it right after booking the appointment on the Prenot@mi portal and must be brought on the day of the appointment.

 

SHIPMENT METHODS FOR THE C.I.E.

Please note that che C.I.E. is not issued on the same day of the appointment; it is shipped to the applicant’s address by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato.

Please note that in the event of a wrong delivery address or absence on the day of the delivery, the envelope will be temporarily kept at the local post office. After aperiod of time, the envelope will to be sent back to the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, in Italy.

It is therefore of the utmost importance to provide the correct address.
